Watamu for non-kiters

By JC Kite School · November 7, 2026

Not everyone in your group kites. That's fine.

Watamu is one of the most beautiful places on the Kenyan coast: white beaches, a marine park, mangrove creeks and forests full of history. Many of our guests come with a partner, friends or family who don't kitesurf – and they often go home with as many stories as the kiters. Here is what we suggest.

On the water

Sunset dhow trip in Mida Creek

A traditional dhow boat, the mangroves of Mida Creek and the sun going down – with wine, grilled fish and vegetables served on board. The perfect way to end the day, for kiters too.

Dolphin watching

A boat trip off Garoda Beach to see dolphins swimming and playing in the open water – and, if you are lucky, to swim with them.

Stand up paddle and wakeboard

SUP rental right at our school on the flat, crystal-clear lagoon, and wakeboard sessions behind our boat in Mida Creek.

Snorkeling and diving

Below the water there is a whole other world: the reefs in front of Watamu are perfect for snorkeling and diving among corals and tropical fish.

On land

Safari in Tsavo East

If you are in Kenya, a safari is a must. We work with friendly, experienced guides who take you to the best areas of Tsavo East National Park, one of the largest parks in the country.

Gede Ruins

The mysterious ruins of a medieval Swahili-Arab town in the forest, just a few minutes from Watamu.

Hell's Kitchen

A half day trip to the "Grand Canyon of Kenya", with unforgettable views of the rock formations.

Simply the beach

Our school is inside the Watamu Beach Cottages resort, right on the beach: sunbeds, shade, food and drinks while you watch the kites. And when the wind drops, everyone meets for sundowners.

Want to try?

Many non-kiters change their minds after a few days on the beach. A short lesson is the best way to find out – see how many hours you need to learn.

All activities can be booked with us: have a look at Tours & Experiences for prices, or write to us and we will organise everything for your group, including accommodation and airport transfer from Malindi or Mombasa.
